Interestingly, raccoons are not native to Japan. There was a cute cartoon show about a raccoon on Japanese TV in 1970s. During that time period, thousands of baby raccoons were imported from USA as pets. /2

But, raccoons are not really good pets. So, people let them loose in the wild when they got tired of them as pets. Just like any other non-native species with no natural predators, these raccoons multiplied exponentially and have become pests. /3
