They need to have industrial positions for them to go to after getting MS/PhD or a few years as postdoc. There aren’t enough academic positions for all.

There are so many collaborations going on between industry and academic labs that involve paying for supporting graduate students and postdocs and also grants to labs for doing certain research. It irks me when people say industry ripping off academic research.
